Rebecca's letter for September

Welcome to Donna Nicholls, our new

Children’s, Families and Schools Worker!

We are delighted to welcome Donna Nicholls as our new Children’s, Families and Schools Worker for our three parishes! Donna is known to many of us, mainly through being Churchwarden for four years at Ruishton (she stepped down in April). She is also on the Messy Church team, and has been a Lay Worship Assistant for the last 18 months or so, leading the Gleaners group and more recently the Songs of Praise service at Ruishton on the third Sunday of the month. Donna has written a piece about herself which may be found here, with a photo of herself and her new logo which has been specially designed by Emma Tucker (from Creech). It looks much better in colour. Donna has also got herself a uniform: a set of royal blue polo and sweat shirts with the logo on, so that she is recognisable around our villages.

She officially started her new role on 29 July by serving as a group leader at the Holiday Club at Creech Baptist Church. This was an excellent way to get to know lots of local families (117 children attended the club) as well as the other leaders and helpers. It was a fantastic week of sharing the good news of Jesus and the love of God with local families – so an excellent way to start!

We are very blessed to have the provision of a new Children’s Worker. This was an important decision and step of faith taken by our three PCCs at a special joint meeting back in July 2018. We had spent some time before that discussing and praying about it, and seeking guidance from God as well as from our local Go Team Advisor on Youth and Children’s Ministry from Bath & Wells Diocese.  Shortly after we took the decision, we received a legacy from a long-standing church member, which the PCCs at Ruishton and Thornfalcon agreed unanimously to give towards the Children’s Worker fund. Creech also had a gift day and received some generous gift aided donations towards the fund. This meant that we could afford nearly three years’ salary for a part-time children’s worker. On the strength of this provision, we went ahead with the appointment. God is good, and after a thorough and prayerful selection process, Donna was appointed.

However, we are still a few thousand pounds short of the full amount for three years’ employment. We are therefore appealing to our church members and supporters, and asking for any donations to help us ensure Donna’s employment for the next three years. Either one-off donations, or regular monthly donations would be much appreciated. Each church has ring-fenced funds in their accounts especially for the Children’s Worker. At this time of year, when we give thanks to God for the harvest, the abundance of blessings which he showers on us, I hope we might be able to review our giving to our church and reflect and pray about how we may support our ongoing mission and ministry to children and families in our villages. Ideally, we would like to extend Donna’s contract beyond three years, but we cannot do that with your help!

Everyone is invited to attend the special Commissioning Service on 8th Sepember at 10 a.m. in Creech church for Donna in her new role. We shall be praying for her and showing her our full support. The collection at that service will be given to the Children’s Worker fund. Please think and pray about how you will respond.

With many thanks and every blessing,

Rebecca Harris
